THE
ANGER
IN ERNEST & ERNESTINE: NO ANGER, JUST PLAIN
FUN
PWM and the Board of Directors would
like to thank everyone who helped make our Spring
fundraising Gala on Thursday May 4, 2006 a wonderful
success.
The evening featured a staged reading
of The Anger in Ernest & Ernestine,
by Leah Cherniak, Martha
Ross, and Robert Morgan.
Directed by Alain Goulem, this
bilingual presentation, with the French text written
by Danielle Desormeaux and entitled
Les Foudres d’Ernest & d’Ernestine,
starred the unforgettable comedic pair of Danielle
herself and Marcel Jeannin. The
reading was stage managed by Shauna Janssen.
A reception provided by Kandy
Bar Cuisine and Ichi Sushi
followed. Lucky audience members took home wonderful
flowering Kalanchoes, wrapped in crepe with raffia.
Courtesy of our Presenting Sponsor, The
Flower Pot, these flower arrangements brought
an elegant touch all evening long to the Kola
Note.
We would particularly like to
thank the following for their untiring support:
Ron Diamond, photographer;
all the donors who sponsored tickets in order for
a artist/student to attend the Gala; Playwrights
Canada Press for their donation and their
dedication in publishing scripts by Canadian artists;
and our wonderful volunteers. And last, but not
least, the audience. We hope you enjoyed your time
with us as much as we enjoyed having you.

Danielle Desormeaux as
Ernestine and Marcel Jeannin as
Ernest

Flowers lended an elegant touch
to the Kola Note, while a fabulous buffet was enjoyed
by all after the show.

PWM artistic director, Paula
Danckert hangs out with the cast from the
show, Marcel and Danielle, and director Alain
Goulem.

MEMBERSHIP
DUES
On April 24, 2006, the Board
of Directors of Playwrights' Workshop Montreal
voted to increase the dues of each membership
level by $5. The new Membership dues were set
as follows:
-
Writing Membership
- $55.00
-
Supporting
Membership - $45.00
-
Student
Membership - $20.00
This $5 increase on the membership
dues will be implemented as of June
1, 2006. Please note that membership
to PWM remains valid for one year from the date
of joining.
While expenses have increased
exponentially and funding is harder and harder
to come by, our dues have remained the same
for the last seven years. Though we are very
hesitant to burden the membership with this
harsh reality, the fact is that every dollar
counts. In reaching the decision to raise the
membership dues, the board considered that members
are offered a great return on their investment.
Writing and Student members receive a great
amount of writing support and workshop resources
in addition to many other privileges.
These include our next issue
of The Big Works coming out in early
fall with more exciting theatre news and original
articles from Canadian artists, and news about
our new season of public readings, residencies
and the Masterclass. Don’t forget your
membership also entitles you to discounts at
many Montreal theatre companies; this includes
tickets to the new opera of A Chair in Love
by Larry Tremblay and John
Metcalf, which was developed through
the assistance of PWM, at Espace Go from June
8 to 18.
We hope you will continue to
support our unique organization, contributing
to the creation of Canadian theatre at its source.
If you would like more information on how to
get involved click here.
POLO'S
FANTASY:
A STAGED READING
Playwright/performer Louis Negin
will unveil his latest play to Montreal audiences
in an exclusive staged reading directed by Daniel
Canty, with Nick Carpenter accompanying Louis
at the piano for the songs.
Polo's Fantasy retraces
"the fantastic lives of Polo and Irving,
and their Jewish Cockney mother." Presented
by PWM, in collaboration with MainLine Theatre,
the reading will take place on Sunday April 2nd
at 8pm at MainLine (3997 St. Laurent).
Donations will be accepted at
the door. For info call 514-843-3685 or e-mail
info@playwrights.ca.
Louis Negin can be seen in several
recent films by Guy Maddin, including The
Saddest Music in the World, Cowards Bend
the Knee, and Sissy Boy Slap Party.
He recently guest starred on ReGenesis
and Slings and Arrows for television.
In the film 54 he appears as the writer
Truman Capote. He has also played opposite Joan
Collins and Dame Edna. Forty years in the theatre
have taken him the world over, including 7 years
at the Stratford Festival. He presently commutes
between Montreal and Toronto with a dog and two
cats.
THE LADIES, THE
PUB, AND THE TALES
PWM and the Board of Directors
would like to thank everyone who helped make A
Bit O’ Blarney, PWM’s St. Patrick’s
Day celebration this past Monday, a great evening:
our sponsors and donors, the Bishop Street
Pub, Boréale,
and Lynda Gould; the performers
Never Surrender, The
Dragpiper, Ladies Luncheon
and our wonderful host, Anisa Lee;
and of course all the story-tellers and the audience.
It would not have been the same
without you. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Sponsors
2005/2006 Artists' Residencies
PWM would like
to thank Scotiabank for their
generous sponsorship of the Artists’ Residencies
for our 2005/2006 season. Since only a portion
of our operating budget is subsidized, corporate
sponsors like Scotiabank play a vital part in
enabling us to continue developing contemporary
works and writers across the country.
Among the artists
who will be coming to Montreal in 2005/2006
are Lois Brown, who will be
here for an extended stay from September to
November, and Daniel MacIvor,
who will be coming sometime in December to continue
work on his new play, Beautiful View,
which will be produced across the country in
2006. Over the past few years, PWM has been
honoured to welcome such talented artists as
Marie Clements, Sherri-D. Wilson, Paul
Thompson, and Guillermo Verdecchia
for artist residencies. For a complete list,
and further information about residencies, check
out the Artists’
Residencies section of our website. If you

Autographed copies of new Canadian plays and books
to be auctioned…
A chance to walk away with these amazing
titles:
Burning Vision
by Marie Clements
Winner of the Canada-Japan
Literary. A play that unmasks the lies of the imperialist
power-elite and dramatizes the rationalizations people construct
to make their circumstance yield the greatest benefit to themselves
for the least amount of effort.
“A brave new play that
bombards the senses and fires up the mind.” – Globe and
Mail
Whale
Riding Weather by Bryden MacDonald
A love story in which
a faded old queen finds his life slipping away from him along
with his young lover, who meets a new, younger man.
“MacDonald’s script, a
roller-coaster ride of pain and humour and pathos and love,
is an actor’s dream.” – The Vancouver Sun
Tiger’s
Heart by Kit Brennan
Winner of the National
Playwriting Competition. England, 1815. A young woman disguises
herself as a man so that she may be allowed to study medicine.
Ten years later “Dr. James Barry,” a military doctor and physician
to the British Governor of South Africa, faces the contradictions
of living behind her mask.
“An intriguing study of
power, ambition and sexual identity.” – Vancouver Sun
Guest of Chance
by Colleen Curran
What does a woman do
when her best friend falls for a handsome, stiff-upper-lip
Englishman? Guests of Chance is a laugh-filled romp through
the English countryside with two inexperienced thirty-something
travelers.
“A book about looking for
love, and knowing when you’ve happened upon the real thing.”
– Quill and Quire
Wally by Greg Kramer
Vancouver is a long way from
Fishguard, Wales, where Wally Greene's life was altered forever
by the events of the Blitz, and where the Christmas pantomime
fired Wally's passion for the world of the theatre. Wally
Greene is now the creator of sets and properties for The Phoenix
Theatre, of which his wife, Georgia, is the artistic director
and oft-leading lady. As a favour to his old friend who is
dying, Wally has reluctantly agreed to take on her youngest
son as an apprentice in his workshop.
“Forget Thomas Pynchon.
Forget Last Exit to Brooklyn. Kramer mythologizes
a new nation of anti-heroes and, if nothing else, he deserves
a (dis)Order of Canada for proving we can honour disaffection
as well as anything else.” – Quill and Quire
Exposure by Greg MacArthur
A two-play anthology
containing the acclaimed plays Snowman and girls!girls!girls!.
“For truly provocative theatre from a new voice, go see
Snowman … it’s loopy, quirky and beautifully done.” –
CBC
“[girls!girls!girls! is]
wondrous, scary and heartbreaking.” – Montreal Mirror
The Harps of God
by Kent Stetson
Winner of the 2001
Governor General's Literary Award for Drama. In 1914, from
March 31 to April 2, death traveled the North Atlantic with
many companions - madness, fear, deceit and despair. Survival
means constant measured movement, and the constant kindling
and re-kindling of hope. Arising from official transcripts
of survivor's testimony before two commissions of enquiry
into the Great Newfoundland Sealing Disaster, The Harps
of God develops themes of human survival in the face
of profound personal devastation.
“Stetson is a writer’s
writer. The love and pain in his scripts is delicately wrought,
the writing full of careful, shaped metaphors intelligently
orchestrated beyond the bounds of notice… He is not a romantic
writer, not contemplative and self confessed… his work is
full of practical passion…” – Canadian Theatre Review
The Swanne by Peter Hinton
The complete epic trilogy
produced by Stratford in 2002, 2003, and 2004, encompassing
George III – The Death of Cupid, Princess Charlotte – The
Acts of Venus, and Queen Victoria – The Seduction of Nemisis.
“Deserves to be seen by
anyone who cares about Canadian theatre.” – Globe and
Mail

Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal is pleased to host a staged performance
by Newfoundland's own Joan M. Sullivan.
"Your Only Life"
Written and performed by Joan M. Sullivan
Directed by Aiden Flynn
Saturday, August 20, 2005
8:00 PM
Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal: 4324 St. Laurent, 2nd floor
Donations accepted at the door
Your Only Life is an unconventional one-woman
show, a mix of domestic to-do lists, investigations on the miracle
of Lazarus, and the sighting of 83 hot air balloons in flight over
Ottawa. The unnamed character, a financially challenged mother of
one (and reluctant care-giver to two cats), engages in some philosophical
riffs, quotes sections from poet Anne Carson and novelist/moralist
C.S. Lewis, holds conversations, retells dreams, and Googles various
religious and mythological allusions. Although it has a nucleus
of seriousness, even grief, the show is written to be delivered
in a comic, straightforward, directly-through-the-fourth-wall manner.
Your Only Life was developed through the
Resource Centre for the Arts Write On! Program, administered
by Amy House and mentored by Berni Stapleton. It debuted at RCA's
Blast Off! Festival May 25-28, 2005.

Joan M. Sullivan is a writer, director and actor.
Her credits include an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Richard
III (Resource Centre for the Arts, March 2003), working as
an assistant director with the National Arts Centre's production
of Arms and The Man (September 2003), and directing Stars
in the Sky Morning (TNL June 2003), Glengarry Glen Ross
(Rabbittown Theatre, April 2004), and Possible Maps (Open
Actor¹s Studio, January 2005).
She is currently working on a script for Rising Tide Theatre, based
on the life of her grandmother, Rose Hoskins, a poet in Trinity,
NL, and an adaptation of Wayne Johnson's award-winning first novel,
The Story of Bobby O'Malley. Joan also works as a freelance
journalist and reviewer for different publications including The
Globe and Mail and CBC Radio. She lives in St. John's with her husband,
Bryan Hennessey, and her teenage daughter Marianne.
Joan M. Sullivan and actor/writer Bryan
Hennessey will be in our studio from August 16 to August
22 to work on their latest projects as part of the PWM Artists'
Residencies Program, sponsored in part by Scotiabank.

Bryan Hennessey was born in St. John's, Newfoundland
in 1949. After working as a musician for 20 years, he began a second
career as an actor in theatre, films, and television including his
role as "Calvin Pope" on the TV series Gullage's.
From 1990 to 1992, he served as Artistic Animateur of the Resource
Centre for the Arts Theatre Company in St-John's, Newfoundland.
In 2002 he was Artist in Residence with that same Company.
As a writer, he is the author of the poetry book Counting Gifts
(1978) and two books of short stories, Girleens in BeatleLove
(1990) and Waking Up in the City of Dreams (1997). As playwright,
he is the author of Jack of Hearts, produced by the RCA
Theatre Company in 2000. He has also co-written three stage plays:
The Gingerbread Men (1996), and Murder at the Royal
Cafe (1995) with his wife Joan Sullivan, and Hanlon House
(1991) with Greg Thomey. He is currently writing a new stage play
called 19 in '68 and a novel entitled Time On My Hands.
