Serge Boucher and Shelley Tepperman
Serge
Boucher’s play Les bonbons qui sauvent la vie
(Lifesavers) was this year’s selection for our Transmissions
program with CEAD, and was translated into English by Shelley
Tepperman.
Acting graduate from the Lionel-Groulx Cégep Theatre Department,
Serge Boucher shares his time between teaching
and writing. His first text, Natures mortes, was staged
by Michel Tremblay. His second play, Motel Hélène,
nominated for a Governor General’s Award, directed by René
Richard Cyr, was created at the Festival international des Francophonies
en Limousin (France). Revived in Québec, Montreal and Ottawa,
the production was brought to television and staged in English at
the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto. One of his most recent plays, 24
poses (portraits), nominated for a Masque Award and for a Governor
General’s Award, was performed hundreds of times at the Théâtre
d’Aujourd’hui and in a tour of Québec before
being brought to television and staged in English at the Alberta
Theatre Project. Serge Boucher is writing an eight-hour television
series currently in development for CBC (French).
Shelley Tepperman is a Quebec-based translator
who specializes in Quebec and Latin American theatre. She has worked
as artistic co-ordinator of Theatre Plus, has been associate director
of Montreal's Street People Theatre, and co-ordinated the 1993 conference
for the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas. Among
her translations are Wajdi Mouawad 's Alphonse and Journée
de noces chez les Cromagnons as Wedding Day at the Cromagnons,
Dominic Champagne 's La Répétition as Playing
Bare and La Cité Interdite as The Forbidden
City, Michel Monty 's Accidents de parcours as Freak
Accidents, Suzanne Lebeau 's Comment vivre avec les hommes
quand on est un géant as A Giant in the Land of
Men, Yvan Bienvenue 's Règlement de contes
as Unsettling Accounts and In vitro (same title)
and François Archambault 's Cul Sec as Fast
Lane and Les Gagnants as The Winners. More
recently, she translated Mexican Sabina Berman's Molière
(the work was presented as part of the 2000 On The Verge Festival
of New Works, Ottawa) and Serge Boucher 's 24 Poses as
24 Exposures.
Brian
Drader
Brian
Drader took
part in an In-House Workshop of his play Dissecting Homo
in January 2005. The play received a staged reading in Ottawa at
On The Verge which was directed by PWM Dramaturg-in-Residence
Emma Tibaldo.
Born
in Brandon, Manitoba, Brian Drader is currently
the head of the Playwriting program at NTS. As well as writing for
the stage, screen and radio, he is also an actor, having appeared
in more than 70 professional productions in theatres across Western
Canada. He has also served as Associate Artistic Director for Prairie
Theatre Exchange, and has been the Dramaturg for their Playblitz
program from 1990-2000, and the MAP/PTE co-sponsored Young Emerging
Playwrights Program for the last three years.
