  Soundings, public reading series

Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal regularly brings visiting playwrights and other theatre professionals to the city of Montréal to discuss their work with our members and the public. Recent soundings invitees include Quebec, English Canadian and playwrights from abroad such as Jonathan Garfinkel, Robert Chafe, Samantha Holcroft, Meiko Ouchi, Michel Azama, David French, José Pliya, Sharon Pollock, Berni Stapleton and Judith Thompson.

In 2006, b uilding upon our relationship with CEAD, our joint Brussels, Belgium-Montréal, Quebec translation project was a multi-year, four-way, trilingual, international exchange project. The project culminated with staged readings of four Belgian plays as part of the 2001 Festival de Théâtre des Amériques: Le Calme by Eric Durnez and Zilou Parle by Patrick Lerch, in French, and A by Eric Durnez, translated by Bobby Theodore and Geobers & Co by Arne Sierens, translated by Della Couling, adapted by Paula Danckert and Peter Hinton, in English. The readings provided formal and informal opportunities for exchange between the writers, translators and the general public. In return, two Canadian plays were sent to Brussels: Reading Hebron by Jason Sherman, translated into French, and Death in New Orleans by John Murrell, translated into Flemish. The copies of the translated texts may be found in the resource centres of PWM and CEAD for future consultation or production.
