  The philosophy

Since a script is a work of literature written for performance, our objective is to bring a full theatricality to the development process. At Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal, we use the reading, the workshop and dramaturgical feedback as tools to help understand the workings of a play and provide the playwright with a constructive assessment of the text.

Excellence

All of the programming at Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal is based on ongoing relationship with writers, in order to see the development of a play through to production. We have the expertise necessary to foster further development, dissemination and celebration of our members’ work across the country and around the world.

In the past five years, PWM has increased the level of dramaturgical response to the writing membership and decreased the time in which it happens. Writing members who live in Montréal or the outlying area receive a one-on-one dramaturgical session. Members outside the Montréal area receive written feedback on their submissions. Integral to our method of dramaturgy is a detailed approach to the work. This means that every script is read by the Artistic Director or the Artist in Residence. Regular dramaturgical consultations ensure the familiarity of the artistic staff with each script and every writer.

Flexibility

PWM works to maintain a flexible approach to programming, to respond quickly to demands of the writing members and their work. The programs recently available to our writing members have included one-on-one dramaturgy, in-house workshops and readings, public readings, our Masterclass and the Playwrights’ Unit. We have also carried out other programs which benefit our membership and the discipline, including translations, our first translation colony, artists-in-residence, a radio drama competition and collaborations with other organizations.

Leadership

Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal continues to be a pioneer in the development of works from new voices of all cultures, as well as new forms of performance.
