A new series of staged public readings showcasing emerging Canadian Queer Playwrights<\/span><\/h4>\n

Playwrights’ Workshop Montr\u00e9al\u2019s Groupe des jeunes cr\u00e9ateurs<\/em> and Centaur Theatre present The Caisse de la Culture Queer Reading Series<\/em>. This reading series will feature three exciting new plays exploring themes of queer identity from very distinct and compelling points of view.<\/p>\n

Ella is a writer, performer, and theatre-maker. She grew up in Markham, Ontario, but is currently in Montreal doing her undergrad at Concordia University in English Literature and Creative Writing, with a minor in Theatre.<\/p>\n

Synopsis:<\/strong> Rachel has run away from home with nothing but her school bag and a copy of Moby Dick. She messed things up with her best friend, she has no idea who she is or what she’s doing, and to top it all off the memory of her eleven-year-old self won\u2019t leave her alone. But when she meets Sam, a graffiti artist, in an alley downtown, she\u2019s convinced she\u2019s found her saviour.<\/p>\n

Gabe is a recent graduate of the Dome. They were the lead writer of a collective creation produced at the Dome in their graduating year. Recent shows they have performed in include Antigone<\/em> (Raise the Stakes Theatre), The Last Wife<\/em> (IMAGO Theatre), and Memento Mori<\/em> by Kaleidoscope Theatre (Montreal Fringe, 2017). They also recently directed and co-produced Gruesome Playground Injuries<\/em> with their company, Playground Productions.<\/p>\n

Synopsis:<\/strong> Eva wakes up in Rio de Janeiro\u2014her own wonderland. In pursuit of her tinder boi and her perfect body, her surreal ambitions come up against her inevitable return to reality. How can Eva reconcile the difference between the life she dreams of and the life she is living?<\/p>\n

Originally from Vancouver, Nathaniel studied drama and theatre at McGill University, and is currently in his final year of the acting program at the National Theatre School of Canada. During his studies, he rediscovered his passion for creation and devised work, which led him to join the Young Creators Unit. He has watched David Attenborough’s The Life of Birds<\/em> one too many times.<\/p>\n

Synopsis:<\/strong> Addison is eight years old and too fabulous for his own good. His only friend is a taxidermy flamingo. Together, this odd pair try to find a nesting place in a big, bad, uncomprehending world.<\/p>\n

The Young Creators Unit was not created as a queer-specific program, but over the past three years has become a vibrant space for self-discovery and political\/personal creation. I am so proud that we’ve gained a reputation for being a supportive space for emerging queer artists to be bold, dive deeply into the intersections of their identity, and make work for the stage that reflects their unique existence in our contemporary world.<\/em><\/p>\n

ABOUT THE YOUNG CREATORS UNIT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to generous funding from Canadian Heritage and the Zeller Family Foundation, and the dedicated mentorship of PWM dramaturg Jesse Stong, the Young Creators Unit has become a mainstay for young Canadian playwrights. Since its beginnings in 2015, YCU has supported more than 90 young artists as they take risks, develop their voices and find their place in Canadian theatre.<\/p>\n
