Playwrights\u2019 Workshop Montr\u00e9al (PWM) and le Centre des auteurs dramatiques<\/a> (CEAD), in partnership with Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland<\/a>, Creative Gros Morne<\/a>, the Bonne Bay Aquarium & Research Station<\/a>, and with the vital support of the Fondation Cole<\/a>, are pleased to announce the seven playwrights participating in the 2025 R\u00e9sidence d\u2019\u00e9criture th\u00e9\u00e2trale de Gros Morne<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This dual-lingual residency welcomes playwrights from across Canada and gives the creative space to work and share in the unparalleled landscape of Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland and Labrador. The program offers dramaturgical conversations in French and English.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For 10 days, Tara Beagan, Anahita Dehbonehie, Thomas Dufour, Sanita Fejzic, Dominique Leclerc, Elie Marchand, and Melissa Williams will be staying at the Bonne Bay Aquarium & Research Station in Norris Point. The artists-in-residence will have the opportunity to explore their plays through unstructured writing time, one-on-one dramaturgical conversations, and group discussions, held in both French and English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

tara beagan (alberta)<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Tara Beagan is a proud Ntlaka\u2019pamux and Irish \u201cCanadian\u201d halfbreed. She is cofounder & codirector of ARTICLE 11 with Andy Moro. Nine of her 38 plays are published. One won a Dora Award. In 2020, Honour Beat<\/em> won the Gwen Pharis Ringwood Award for Drama. In 2025 The Ministry of Grace<\/em> did the same. Beagan was the 2020 laureate of the Siminovitch Prize for theatre, playwriting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PLAY IN DEVELOPMENT: Squeaky<\/em><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1969. Squeaky is a young woman ageing out of foster care. Just as she fears she has no place to belong the news is overtaken by reports of some heinous murders in California – surely her true sisters! – and the election of a charismatic PM who is certainly Squeaky\u2019s real father. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

anahita dehbonehie (ontario)<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Anahita Dehbonehie is an Iranian artist currently based in Toronto. Her practice extends across design, direction and playwriting. Her award winning design work in performance has been featured across Canada and internationally. As a playwright she has received support from Nightwood Theatre, Outside the March, Driftwood Theatre and the Urjo Kareda residency at Tarragon Theatre, where her first play will premiere in the coming season. She is committed to work that challenges positions of power and creates space for incendiary conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PLAY IN DEVELOPMENT: Swallow the Fire<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bomb is about to go off but it’s unclear whether it will change the world or merely feed the algorithm. As the clock ticks toward detonation, the play unspools in real time: a confrontation between generations, between reform and revolution, and between public performance and private conviction. Swallow the Fire<\/em> asks what happens when activism becomes theatre, when maternal love becomes collateral, and when the end of the world is less terrifying than the end of our illusions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Thomas Dufour est un auteur dramatique et sc\u00e9nariste originaire du Lac-Saint-Jean. Il vit pr\u00e9sentement \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. En 2023, sa pi\u00e8ce Maison seule <\/em>re\u00e7oit le prix Gratien-G\u00e9linas. Il remporte en 2024 le grand prix du concours Cours \u00e9crire ton court avec son sc\u00e9nario Garage double. <\/em>Thomas est dipl\u00f4m\u00e9 du programme d\u2019\u00c9criture dramatique de l\u2019\u00c9cole nationale de th\u00e9\u00e2tre du Canada (2022).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PLAY IN DEVELOPMENT: Surveillance<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique travaille dans une salle de surveillance d\u2019un CHSLD. Elle observe en continu les a\u00een\u00e9s par cam\u00e9ra, signalant chutes et anomalies. Pour survivre \u00e0 cette proximit\u00e9 froide avec la mort, elle invente des vies aux r\u00e9sidents. L\u2019arriv\u00e9e de J\u00e9r\u00e9mie, un jeune homme fuyant sa vie, change sa routine. Tranquillement, ils tombent amoureux en regardant des gens mourir. Surveillance questionne l\u2019absurdit\u00e9 d\u2019un syst\u00e8me qui filme les derniers moments des personnes \u00e2g\u00e9es, qui cr\u00e9e une distance entre eux et le monde. La pi\u00e8ce transforme progressivement ces corps film\u00e9s en existences singuli\u00e8res, vibrantes, dignes d\u2019empathie.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

sanita fejzic (ontario)<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Sanita Fejzi\u0107 is a playwright, poet, and literary writer. Her award-winning play, Blissful State of Surrender, about a refugee-turned-immigrant family from Bosnia and Herzegovina premiered at the Great Canadian Theatre Company in 2022. In 2023, Sanita produced Why Worry About Their Futures at the undercurrents festival, a tryptic of three short plays about eco-social justice. Sanita is midwifing Peasant Futurisms, an artistic movement that resists late capitalism and imagines edible and wilder futures grounded in Bosniak peasant traditions. Her radio play, Machines and Moss, produced in 2024 by the National Arts Centre, enacts a post-apocalyptic version of Peasant Futurisms. Sanita lives with her wife and kids on the unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg people in Ottawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PLAY IN DEVELOPMENT:<\/strong> Land Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Land Matters dramatizes two brothers, Elvis and Amar, who must decide what to do with the vast plot of land they have inherited after the death of the father. Amar wants to keep the house and give back 95% of the land to the Indigenous community it was stolen from centuries ago. Elvis\u2014who barely survived the Omarska concentration camp as the Army of Republika Srpska stole the family\u2019s land\u2014is more than outraged. After everything their family has been through, genocide and forced exile, he wants to sell and cash out. Muslim Bosniaks did not colonize Canada, so why should they contend with its colonial history? The clash of values between the two brothers is a personal story with universal resonance as refugee-turned-immigrants grapple with their responsibilities in an era of truth and reconciliation, growing political and economic uncertainly, and the normalization of neoliberal slogans like \u201cbuild, baby, build\u201d and \u201cdrill, baby, drill.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Dominique est autrice, co-metteure en sc\u00e8ne et interpr\u00e8te des pi\u00e8ces Une vie intelligente (Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Duceppe), i\/O (Festival TransAm\u00e9riques, Carrefour international de th\u00e9\u00e2tre de Qu\u00e9bec, Centre du th\u00e9\u00e2tre d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui,), et Post Humains (Espace Libre, FIND festival de la Schaub\u00fchne, Carrefour international de th\u00e9\u00e2tre de Qu\u00e9bec). Ses deux premi\u00e8res cr\u00e9ations ont \u00e9t\u00e9 finalistes au Prix Michel-Tremblay et ont \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es en tourn\u00e9e \u00e0 travers le Qu\u00e9bec. Elle a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 et sc\u00e9naris\u00e9 le long m\u00e9trage documentaire Post Humains, produit par l\u2019Office national du film du Canada, paru en 2025. De 2009 \u00e0 2019, elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 codirectrice de la compagnie de th\u00e9\u00e2tre Les Biches Pensives, qui a produit 5 cr\u00e9ations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les mill\u00e9nariaux sont plus perfectionnistes que jamais. Encens\u00e9e par la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 occidentale, cette volont\u00e9 d\u2019exceller dans tout a des impacts majeurs sur leur \u00e9quilibre mental (insatisfaction chronique, procrastination, anxi\u00e9t\u00e9, d\u00e9pression, suicide). Confront\u00e9e \u00e0 ses propres r\u00e8gles et standards trop \u00e9lev\u00e9s, l\u2019autrice interroge notre capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 errer et \u00e0 tomber dans une \u00e9poque obs\u00e9d\u00e9e par l’optimisation. Et si on priorisait la route \u00e0 l\u2019arriv\u00e9e? \u00c0 la perfection (titre provisoire) est une performance sur la performance, une mise en abyme de nos obsessions contemporaines, une invitation \u00e0 c\u00e9l\u00e9brer l\u2019imperfection humaine dans un monde en crise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Elie Marchand est un auteur et un artiste multidisciplinaire qui a cr\u00e9\u00e9 cinq pi\u00e8ces de th\u00e9\u00e2tre pour les jeunes publics. Dans ses \u0153uvres, Elie cherche \u00e0 montrer des personnages peu repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s et \u00e0 donner espoir aux enfants pour qui la diff\u00e9rence peut parfois apporter des difficult\u00e9s. En plus de sa pratique pour les jeunes publics, Elie \u00e9crit des pi\u00e8ces tout public et participe r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement \u00e0 des \u00e9v\u00e9nements internationaux sur la dramaturgie contemporaine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PLAY IN DEVELOPMENT: Armure<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armure<\/em> est un docu-fiction o\u00f9 j\u2019explore la relation avec ma grand-m\u00e8re \u00e0 travers le fil de notre histoire familiale. En m\u00ealant souvenirs personnels, archives et fragments de dialogues, je tisse un r\u00e9cit o\u00f9 la couture devient m\u00e9taphore : coudre, d\u00e9coudre, raccommoder les silences et les zones d\u2019ombre. Comme on suit le droit fil pour construire un tissu solide, je tente de suivre le fil sensible de nos transmissions \u2014 affectives, culturelles, invisibles. Ce projet  interroge ce qu\u2019on h\u00e9rite malgr\u00e9 soi, ce qu\u2019on choisit de garder, et ce qu\u2019on peut transformer, ensemble, \u00e0 la main.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Melissa Williams is a playwright, theatre and dance artist from St. John\u2019s, Newfoundland. She is a graduate of Memorial University\u2019s Grenfell Campus Theatre Performance program and has spent nearly a decade studying and working in Toronto. Her work focuses on the exploration of womanhood, trauma, neurodivergence and queerness. Melding dance and theatre in her most recent years of creation, Melissa aims to create curiosity and consideration with her work, investigating what we fear most and questioning preconceived notions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FEVER follows W1, W2 and W3 on their journey of self-discovery and realization as they navigate an unfamiliar world causing them to question everything they know. Rooted in the deepest parts of our subconscious, the women muse over the things they wish they could forget, the things they wished they knew sooner, and the things they will never understand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
