Playwrights\u2019 Workshop Montr\u00e9al (PWM) and le Centre des auteurs dramatiques<\/a> (CEAD), in partnership with Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland<\/a>, Creative Gros Morne<\/a>, the Bonne Bay Aquarium & Research Station<\/a>, and with the vital support of the Fondation Cole<\/a>, are pleased to announce the seven playwrights participating in the 2026 R\u00e9sidence d\u2019\u00e9criture th\u00e9\u00e2trale de Gros Morne<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This dual-lingual residency welcomes playwrights from across Canada and gives the creative space to work and share in the unparalleled landscape of Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland and Labrador. The program offers dramaturgical conversations in French and English. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For 10 days, Jean-Philippe Baril Gu\u00e9rard, Caroline B\u00e9lisle, Caleigh Crow, Coleen MacPherson, Jojo O’Neil, Pascale Rafie, and Ian Iqbal Rashid will be staying at the Bonne Bay Aquarium & Research Station in Norris Point. The artists-in-residence will have the opportunity to explore their plays through unstructured writing time, one-on-one dramaturgical conversations, and group discussions, held in both French and English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

N\u00e9 en 1988, Jean-Philippe Baril Gu\u00e9rard est auteur, com\u00e9dien, et metteur en sc\u00e8ne. Il a sign\u00e9 quatre romans, six pi\u00e8ces, et plusieurs sc\u00e9narios pour le cin\u00e9ma et la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caroline b\u00e9lisle (nouveau-brunswick)<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Caroline B\u00e9lisle est une com\u00e9dienne, autrice dramatique et f\u00e9ministe ben ben f\u00e2ch\u00e9e dipl\u00f4m\u00e9e de l\u2019\u00c9cole nationale de th\u00e9\u00e2tre du Canada et de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Moncton. Elle remporte le prix Gratien-G\u00e9linas pour son texte Les remugles ou La danse nuptiale est une langue morte, <\/em>\u00e9galement finaliste aux prix litt\u00e9raires du Gouverneur G\u00e9n\u00e9ral. Elle est \u00e9galement r\u00e9cipiendaire de deux \u00c9loizes de l\u2019artiste de l\u2019ann\u00e9e en th\u00e9\u00e2tre. Ses \u0153uvres sont produites par le th\u00e9\u00e2tre l\u2019Escaouette, Satellite Th\u00e9\u00e2tre, le Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Populaire d\u2019Acadie, le Th\u00e9\u00e2tre des B\u00e9loufilles, le Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Catapulte et le Th\u00e9\u00e2tre La Seizi\u00e8me. Bleue (titre provisoire)<\/em> met en sc\u00e8ne Nadine, qui a r\u00e9cemment perdu sa job et qui est en train de virer folle dans l\u2019appartement que sa femme a red\u00e9cor\u00e9 de fond en comble\u2026de diff\u00e9rentes valeurs de gris. Pour sortir de son marasme, Nadine d\u00e9veloppe une relation malsaine (si une telle chose est possible) avec le bleu. Cette relation grandiose et po\u00e9tique lui permettra d\u2019entrer en contact avec quelque chose en elle qui d\u00e9fie les lois du quotidien. C\u2019est une pi\u00e8ce sur l\u2019\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me que les humains sont en train de b\u00e2tir pour eux-m\u00eames. C\u2019est en quelque sorte un texte sur la couleur ou plut\u00f4t, sur les effets qu\u2019a sur nous son absence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

caleigh crow (alberta)<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Caleigh Crow is a queer Metis director, playwright, and performer from Mohkinstsis in Treaty 7 Territory. In 2024 she was honoured to receive the Governor General\u2019s Literary Award for Drama for her play There is Violence, There is Righteous Violence, and There is Death or, The Born-Again Crow, <\/em>published by Playwrights Canada Press. That play was also a nominee for the Indigenous Voices Awards, Dora Mavor Moore Awards, and the Saskatoon and Area Theatre Awards. Most recently, she won the 2026 Betty Mitchell Award for Best New Play for Hucksterland<\/em>, alongside songwriters Sacha Crow & Gus Rendell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PLAY IN DEVELOPMENT: SUPERPARAMAGNETISM<\/em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

SUPERPARAMAGNETISM is an expansive sci-fi, time-travelling exploration of electric and human connectivity. The play begins in the year 2335 where an AI supercomputer has been running the show on earth for a century. Two humans attempt to use the earths magnetic field to unify all of humanity\u2019s knowledge to hopefully destroy the computer and return the earth to humankind\u2019s stewardship. Their attempt causes the play to move backwards in time from 2335 to 2024 to 1975 to 1935 to 1886 to 1412 to 1 000 BC to 30 000 BC. We meet many different characters who all experience electricity & technology according to their time period, but who are all ultimately seeking to be understood.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

coleen macpherson (ontario)<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Coleen Shirin MacPherson is a theatre artist, playwright, director, and Artistic Director of Open Heart Surgery Theatre based in Toronto. A graduate of \u00c9cole Jacques Lecoq in Paris, she creates poetic and experimental physical theatre exploring cross-cultural collaboration. Her work includes This Is Why We Live, which toured Canada, Europe and had its U.S. premiere at La MaMa in New York City, and Erased, a Dora Award\u2013nominated play named one of Toronto\u2019s best productions of 2024 (Toronto Star) and represented Canada at the 2026 Heidelberger St\u00fcckemarkt in Germany. She is the recipient of the Ken McDougall Award for Directing and is writing a new adaptation of The Persians, first developed at the Stratford Festival. Coleen is currently Assistant Professor and Mainstage Director at the University of Toronto, St. George.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PLAY IN DEVELOPMENT:<\/strong> The Persians Re-Imagined after Aeschylus<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coleen MacPherson\u2019s adaptation of The Persians reimagines Aeschylus\u2019 ancient tragedy for a contemporary audience, exploring how a 2,500-year-old text can speak to the realities of our world today. Building on Aeschylus\u2019 radical choice to tell the story of his enemy, the adaptation expands the voices within the Persian Empire, including historical figures such as Artemisia of Caria, commander and advisor to Xerxes, King of Persia. Through a reimagined chorus of diverse and contradictory voices, the work examines the contradictions of power and ambition, and the devastating consequences of both. The Persians asks how ancient stories can illuminate our present and confront the human cause of war.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Jojo o’neil (Qu\u00e9bec, ontario)<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Jojo O\u2019Neil is a playwright, storyteller, and solo-performer originally from Markham, Ontario. A recent graduate from The National Theatre School of Canada\u2019s Playwriting program, her plays often explore themes such as madness, intergenerationality, desire, home, and love. Some of her plays include: The Harpy <\/em>(solo-play, development funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, staged reading at The Pipeline Reading series 2024, directed by Barry Bilinsky) which won Infinith\u00e9\u00e2tre\u2019s Write-On-Q! playwriting competition, Holes <\/em>(staged reading at Centaur Theatre\u2019s WinterWorks Festival 2026, directed by Christopher Morris & dramaturgy by Andrea Romaldi), & No Jumping <\/em>(NTS New Words Festival 2026, directed by Azal Dosanjh).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PLAY IN DEVELOPMENT: Sarah<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarah <\/em>follows six transexual women gathering in a crumbling Chinatown apartment in the midst of an ongoing eradication. War seeps through the cracks of the failing foundation as these women all look for one particular person who shares their name; Sarah, the only hormone dealer left in the city, who has gone MIA during an age where being trans gets you killed. Exploring blame, gatekeeping, & sisterhood, Sarah<\/em> is a political drama using verbatim text to tell a story of six women\u2019s struggle for life in a world that seeks to wipe their existence off the face of the Earth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

pascale rafie (QU\u00c9BEC)<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Dipl\u00f4m\u00e9e de l\u2019\u00c9cole nationale de th\u00e9\u00e2tre en \u00c9criture dramatique et \u00e9galement titulaire d\u2019une ma\u00eetrise en Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de l\u2019UQAM, Pascale Rafie a \u00e9crit au fil des ans tant pour les jeunes publics (signalons Charlotte Sicotte) que pour les adultes (membre du collectif d\u2019\u00e9criture de Cabaret neiges noires). On lui doit, entre autres, Soleil, Le Paradis mobile et Les Filles Lafaille. Plus r\u00e9cemment, on a pu voir La Recette de baklawa en traduction anglaise au Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Centaur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enseignante au d\u00e9partement de th\u00e9\u00e2tre du C\u00e9gep de Saint-Laurent depuis 20 ans, elle est aussi active en m\u00e9diation culturelle – mentionnons Belles-S\u0153urs d\u2019ici et d\u2019ailleurs, projet d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 et anim\u00e9 en collaboration avec des femmes immigrantes de l\u2019arrondissement de Saint-Laurent. Toujours travers\u00e9e par les questions li\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019immigration et \u00e0 la place des femmes dans la soci\u00e9t\u00e9, elle poursuit sa route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PLAY IN DEVELOPMENT: Elle court<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adela, 39 ans, croit encore au bonheur. Entre l\u2019amour qu\u2019elle porte \u00e0 ses deux enfants et l\u2019emprise silencieuse d\u2019un mari aussi absent que destructeur, elle vacille. Marqu\u00e9e, comme lui, par l\u2019abandon, elle h\u00e9site entre fuir ou rester, jusqu\u2019au jour o\u00f9\u2026 un choix s\u2019impose. Son cheminement se d\u00e9ploie en un tourbillon de souvenirs, de r\u00eaves grotesques et anxiog\u00e8nes. La violence du mari est incarn\u00e9e par les forces de la nature – orage, inondation ou s\u00e9ismes qui envahissent le monde d\u2019Adela. Alors que tout tombe, elle trouve refuge dans le jardinage ou dans la garde-robe de la cave. La terre devient un espace de r\u00e9sistance et de transformation, o\u00f9 l\u2019enfermement pourrait peu \u00e0 peu se m\u00e9tamorphoser en germination et renaissance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ian Iqbal rashid (newfoundland and labrador)<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Ian Iqbal Rashid is a poet, screenwriter, and filmmaker. A writer and co-executive producer of the Peabody and Canadian Screen Award-winning comedy Sort Of<\/em> (CBC\/HBO Max), he previously wrote for the BAFTA-winning drama This Life<\/em> (BBC). His feature films Touch of Pink<\/em> et How She Move<\/em>, both of which he directed, premiered and sold to Sony and Paramount, respectively, at Sundance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His work has been commissioned by broadcasters and studios including the BBC, HBO, Showtime, Amazon, CBC, Crave, and Channel 4. Alongside screenwriting, he is an award-winning curator and poet, and the author of three collections, including Black Markets<\/em>, White Boyfriends<\/em> et Other Acts of Elision<\/em>. His first play, Cocktail Hour<\/em>, received a public workshop production in Halifax in 2026. Also in 2026, he served as a juror for the International Emmy Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in Dar es Salaam and raised in Toronto, Rashid lived for many years in London, England and now resides in Corner Brook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1996. The AIDS drug cocktails have arrived, offering a future to men who had almost stopped believing in one. Over the course of a single evening, two long-time lovers invite a younger couple home for drinks. What begins as flirtation becomes a dangerous game of wit, seduction and psychological brinkmanship, as buried grief, artistic rivalry and old betrayals rise to the surface. Inspired by Maxim Mazumdar’s unrealized all-male production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?<\/em>, Cocktail Hour<\/em> is an intimate, darkly funny play about the stories we tell ourselves until history asks us to imagine a different future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
