{"id":4392,"date":"2019-02-28T19:07:04","date_gmt":"2019-03-01T00:07:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/?p=4392"},"modified":"2019-10-29T17:15:36","modified_gmt":"2019-10-29T21:15:36","slug":"announcing-the-2019-participants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/fr\/2019\/02\/28\/announcing-the-2019-participants\/","title":{"rendered":"ANNOUNCING THE 2019 PARTICIPANTS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #07bfdc;\"><a style=\"color: #07bfdc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cead.qc.ca\/_news\/id\/372?fbclid=IwAR2tZ-yyKwb_sUNlGHOgJ-nxjaadmptyFrE0pFGnhKwbibokAW2uXPbucFk\"><em>Lire l&#8217;annonce en fran\u00e7ais.<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Playwrights\u2019 Workshop Montreal (PWM) and le Centre des auteurs dramatiques (CEAD) are pleased to announce the playwrights who were selected to take part in the 2019 Gros Morne Playwrights\u2019 Residency in Newfoundland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From April 17-28,&nbsp;<strong>Julie Tamiko Manning (QC)<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Meghan Swaby (ON)<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Robert Chafe (St. John&#8217;s)<\/strong>, <strong>Yolanda Bonnell (ON)<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>R\u00e9becca D\u00e9raspe (QC)<\/strong>, <strong>Royds Fuentes-Imbert (QC)<\/strong>, and&nbsp; <strong>S\u00e9bastien David (QC)&nbsp;<\/strong>will be staying at the Bonne Bay Marine Station located next to the Gros Morne National Park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Gros Morne Playwrights\u2019 Residency brings French and English playwrights from across Canada together to write, dream, share and create. Headed by PWM and Le Centre des auteurs dramatiques (CEAD) in partnership with Creative Gros Morne, Memorial University of Newfoundland and the Cole Foundation, the program offers dramaturgy in both official languages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4403\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Emma-Tibaldo_web-250x300.png\" alt=\"Emma Tibaldo\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\">&nbsp; &nbsp;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4404\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Paul-Lefebvre_web-250x300.png\" alt=\"Paul Lefebvre\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The residency, hosted by <strong>Emma Tibaldo<\/strong>, Artistic Director of PWM, and<strong> Paul Lefebvre<\/strong>, Dramaturgic Counsellor at the CEAD, will give priority to an individual writing retreat while also offering group discussions, encounters, and public readings of work in progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>THE PWM PARTICIPANTS<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<article class=\"yc-bio\">\n<div class=\"yc-col1\">\n<figure class=\"yc-bio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4394 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Julie-Tamiko-Manning_web-250x300.png\" alt=\"Julie Tamiko Manning\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>JULIE TAMIKO MANNING<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Play in development:&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #2f0bc3;\"><em>MIZUSH\u014cBAI<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Julie Tamiko Manning is an award-winning Montreal actor and theatre creator. Selected acting credits include: Annie in <em>Jean Dit<\/em>, Elena in <em>Butcher <\/em>(Centaur), Isabella Bird in <em>Top Girls<\/em> (Segal), and Emilia in <em>Othello<\/em> (Scapegoat Carnavale). Her first play, <em>Mixie and the Halfbreeds<\/em> (with Adrienne Wong) was recently produced by fuGEN in Toronto and her second play <em>The Tashme Project<\/em> (with Matt Miwa), a verbatim retelling of the Japanese Canadian internment experience, has recently finished touring Toronto and Vancouver. Her third play, <em>Mizush\u014dbai<\/em>, commissioned by Tableau D&#8217;H\u00f4te Theatre, is about Kiyoko Tanaka Goto, a Japanese picture-bride turned \u2018underground\u2019 business woman in 1930\u2019s British Columbia.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<article class=\"yc-bio\">\n<div class=\"yc-col1\">\n<figure class=\"yc-bio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4395 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Meghan-Swaby_web-250x300.png\" alt=\"Meghan Swaby\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">MEGHAN SWABY<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Play in development:<span style=\"color: #2f0bc3;\"><em> Breadfruit<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Meghan Swaby is an actor and playwright born and raised in Toronto. Her play <em>Venus\u2019 Daughter<\/em> was produced by Obsidian Theatre in 2016 and was recently included on The SureFire List (Playwrights Guild of Canada) as one of the top 23 recommended&nbsp; plays in Canada. She has participated in various playwrighting programs over the years, such as; Nightwood Theatre\u2019s <em>Write from the Hip<\/em>, Diaspora Dialogues Playwright Residency and The Stratford Festivals\u2019 Playwrights Retreat. In 2017, Meghan was one of 50 playwrights selected to have their work included in, 50in50: Writing Black Women Into Existence which was curated by Dominique Morisseau at the Billie Holiday Theatre in Brooklyn, New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<article class=\"yc-bio\">\n<div class=\"yc-col1\">\n<figure class=\"yc-bio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4397 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Robert-Chafe_web-250x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ROBERT CHAFE<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Play in development:<span style=\"color: #2f0bc3;\"><em> Everybody Just Calm the Fuck Down<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Robert Chafe has worked in theatre, dance, opera, radio, fiction and film. His stage plays have been seen in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and in the United States, and include <em>Oil and Water<\/em>, <em>Tempting Providence<\/em>, <em>Afterimage<\/em>, <em>Under Wraps<\/em>, <em>Between Breaths<\/em>, and <em>The Colony of Unrequited Dreams<\/em> (adapted from the novel by Wayne Johnston.) He has been shortlisted twice for the Governor General\u2019s Literary Award for Drama and he won the award for Afterimage in 2010. He has been guest instructor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, and The National Theatre School of Canada. In 2018 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is the playwright and Artistic Director of Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<article class=\"yc-bio\">\n<div class=\"yc-col1\">\n<figure class=\"yc-bio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4396 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Yolanda-Bonnell_web-250x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">YOLANDA BONNELL<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Play in development: <span style=\"color: #2f0bc3;\"><em>My Sister&#8217;s Rage<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yolanda Bonnell is a Queer 2 Spirit Ojibwe\/South Asian performer and creator from Fort William First Nation in Thunder Bay, ON. Now based in Toronto, and a graduate of Humber College\u2019s Theatre Performance program, Yolanda was named one of NOW Magazine&#8217;s Theatre Discoveries and most exciting artists to watch in Summerworks 2016.&nbsp; Her solo show <em>bug<\/em>, completed a tour of the unceded Coast Salish territories, followed by a premiere in the Luminato Festival.&nbsp; She was also a part of Factory Theatre\u2019s The Foundry, a creation program for new career writers, where her play, <em>Scanner<\/em> continues to be developed. She has written several plays that have been performed and translated around the world, including <em>Deux ans de votre vie<\/em>, <em>Plus que toi<\/em>, <em>Peau d&#8217;ours<\/em>, <em>Gam\u00e8tes<\/em>, <em>Nino<\/em>, <em>Je suis William<\/em>, <em>Le merveilleux voyage de R\u00e9al de Montr\u00e9al<\/em>, <em>Partout ailleurs<\/em>, and <em>Nos petits doigts<\/em>. She is also a member of Th\u00e9\u00e2tre la Licorne\u2019s playwright-in-residence program. She won the 2018 Critics\u2019 Award for Best Young Audience Play for <em>Je suis William<\/em>, Best Script Montreal 2017 for<em> Gam\u00e8tes<\/em> and the 2010 BMO Playwright Award for <em>Deux ans de votre vie<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<article class=\"yc-bio\">\n<div class=\"yc-col1\">\n<figure class=\"yc-bio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4399 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Royds-Fuentes-Imbert_web-250x300.png\" alt=\"Royds Fuentes-Imbert\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ROYDS FUENTES-IMBERT<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Play in development: <span style=\"color: #2f0bc3;\"><em>Taxidermie<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Born in Havana, Royds Fuentes-Imbert completed a degree in Theatre at the University of Arts of Cuba (ISA) specializing in Dramaturgy and Directing before going on to teach theatre history and dramaturgy. A poet, playwright and director, he has published several French-language plays. He has been living in Montreal since 1997 where he pursues research in anthropology and theatre. He joined the faculty of the \u00c9cole sup\u00e9rieure de th\u00e9\u00e2tre de l&#8217;UQAM in 2017, where he teaches, among other courses, a dramaturgy workshop focused on playwriting (Atelier de dramaturgie : \u00c9criture dramatique) and a course on dramaturgy and theatrical poetry (Dramaturgie et po\u00e9tiques th\u00e9\u00e2trales). He has since combined academic activities (teaching and research).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<article class=\"yc-bio\">\n<div class=\"yc-col1\">\n<figure class=\"yc-bio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4400 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/S\u00e9bastien-David-_web-250x300.png\" alt=\"S\u00e9bastien David\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>S\u00c9BASTIEN DAVID<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Play in development: <span style=\"color: #2f0bc3;\"><em>Fins et suites<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A graduate of the Performance Program at the National Theatre School (2006), S\u00e9bastien David is also a playwright and director as well as Artistic Director of La Bataille, a theatre company specializing in the creation of new works. An award-winning playwright, he wrote <em>T&#8217;es o\u00f9 Gaudreault pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 de Ta yeule Kathleen<\/em> (2011),<em> Les morb(y)des<\/em> (2013),<em> Les haut-parleurs<\/em> (2015) as well as <em>Dimanche napalm<\/em> (2016), winner of the prestigious Governor General&#8217;s Award in 2017. All his works are published by Lem\u00e9ac \u00c9diteur.
