{"id":5534,"date":"2019-04-29T15:24:28","date_gmt":"2019-04-29T19:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/?p=5534"},"modified":"2019-10-29T23:35:48","modified_gmt":"2019-10-30T03:35:48","slug":"the-2019-glassco-translation-residency-in-tadoussac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/fr\/2019\/04\/29\/the-2019-glassco-translation-residency-in-tadoussac\/","title":{"rendered":"ANNOUNCING THE 2019 PARTICIPANTS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/fr\/participants-residence-traduction-glassco\/\">Lire l\u2019annonce en fran\u00e7ais<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From<strong>&nbsp;June 12 to 22<\/strong>, Playwrights\u2019 Workshop Montr\u00e9al, in partnership with the Cole Foundation, and with the support of donations in the memory of the great Canadian theatre artist, Bill Glassco, will host the 16th edition of the Glassco Translation Residency, taking place in breathtaking Tadoussac, Qu\u00e9bec.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Under the mentorship of award-winning dramaturg&nbsp;<strong>Bobby Theodore<\/strong>,&nbsp;playwrights and translators&nbsp;will immerse themselves in an&nbsp;extraordinary <strong>10-day retreat<\/strong>, creating new translations of works that will be produced on stages across the country.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s residency welcomes four Canadian plays that will be translated into three different languages that include English, French, and Tagalog.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">THE PARTICIPANTS<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Play to be translated&nbsp;(English&nbsp;into French):<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #2f0bc3;\"><em><strong>One Discordant Violin<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/MARYSE-WARDA_Headshot-250x300.png\" alt=\"MARYSE WARDA\" width=\"200\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/MARYSE-WARDA_Headshot-250x300.png 250w, https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/MARYSE-WARDA_Headshot.png 313w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>MARYSE WARDA, TRANSLATOR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maryse was born and raised in Egypt. In 1991, Pierre Bernard, artistic director of Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de Quat\u2019Sous, gave her a first shot at translation &#8211; Cindy Lou Johnson\u2019s <em>Brilliant Traces.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since then, she has translated more than 60 plays. She was instrumental in bringing the works of English Canadian writers such as George F. Walker (<em>Suburban Motel cycle<\/em>), John Mighton (<em>Possible Worlds and Half Life<\/em>), Daniel Brooks (<em>Insomnia<\/em>), and Morris Panych (<em>Vigil<\/em>) to francophone audiences. She has also translated works from American and British playwrights such as Howard Barker, Margaret Edson, David Greig, David Hare, David Mamet, and Philip Ridley. Her translations are celebrated for being faithful to the original, while making effective yet unostentatious use of the Quebec idiom. Her translation of Walker\u2019s <em>Suburban Motel<\/em> series earned her a Masque award in 2000 from the Acad\u00e9mie qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise du th\u00e9\u00e2tre. In 2011, her translation of Greg MacArthur&#8217;s <em>The Toxic Bus Incident<\/em> earned her a Governor General\u2019s Literary Award.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018-2019, she did the translations of Erin Shields&#8217; <em>Unit B17-17<\/em>, Harold Pinter&#8217;s<em> Betrayal<\/em>, Simon Stephens&#8217;s <em>The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time<\/em>, Tom Schulman&#8217;s <em>Dead Poets&#8217; Society<\/em>, and Willy Russell&#8217;s <em>Educating Rita<\/em>, among others. Many of her translations have benefited from the Tadoussac residency, such as Douglas Maxwell&#8217;s <em>Promises, Promises<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5564\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/ANTHONY-BLACK_Headshot-250x300.png\" alt=\"ANTHONY BLACK\" width=\"200\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/ANTHONY-BLACK_Headshot-250x300.png 250w, https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/ANTHONY-BLACK_Headshot.png 313w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>ANTHONY BLACK, PLAYWRIGHT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anthony&nbsp;\u200bis a versatile artist who for 20 years has worked as a writer, director, actor, designer and as artistic co-director of Halifax&#8217;s internationally acclaimed 2b theatre company.<\/p>\n<p>His projects with 2b include:<em>&nbsp;\u200bInvisible Atom<\/em>\u200b, (writer\/ performer) which toured for over a decade across Canada and around the world, in both English and French;&nbsp;\u200b<em>When it Rains<\/em>,\u200b&nbsp;(writer\/ director\/ performer), which has played across Canada and around the world- he also directed a Spanish Language version of the show in Buenos Aires;&nbsp;<em>Homage\u200b<\/em>&nbsp;(writer); <em>The Observed Flight of Birds<\/em> (co-director\/ lead writer);\u200b&nbsp;<em>Unconscious at the Sistine Chapel<\/em>\u200b&nbsp;by Michael MacKenzie (director);&nbsp;<em>\u200bRebecca Reads Nora Reads Molly&nbsp;<\/em>&#8211; text by James Joyce (concept\/ direction)&nbsp;<em>\u200bThe Story of Mr. Wright<\/em>\u200b&nbsp;(co-director\/ co-creator);\u200b&nbsp;<em>One Discordant Violin<\/em>\u200b&nbsp;(based on a short story by Yann Martel &#8211; adaptor\/ do-director\/ performer\/ set design)<\/p>\n<p>Anthony\u2019s work has won awards and critical acclaim around the world and has traveled to some of the world\u2019s most prestigious arts festivals and venues, in cities across Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony&nbsp;is leader in the artistic community in Nova Scotia, mentoring artists, advocating for the sector, and provoking artistic discussion through 2b\u2019s Colloquium series &#8211; a program dedicated to fostering better conversations about art-making.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Play to be translated (French into English):<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #2f0bc3;\"><em><strong>Dehors<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5565\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/LEANNA-BRODIE_Headshot-250x300.png\" alt=\"LEANNA BRODIE\" width=\"200\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/LEANNA-BRODIE_Headshot-250x300.png 250w, https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/LEANNA-BRODIE_Headshot.png 313w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>LEANNA BRODIE, TRANSLATOR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leanna Brodie is a Vancouver-based writer, actor, and the translator of numerous Qu\u00e9bec playwrights, including H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Ducharme (whose Dora-winning<em> Baobab<\/em> continues to tour internationally after more than 600 performances), Catherine L\u00e9ger, Louise Bombardier, Larry Tremblay, and Christian B\u00e9gin (5 Vancouver Jessie Award nominations and two wins for Ruby Slippers Theatre&#8217;s <em>After Me<\/em>). <em>You Are Happy<\/em>, <em>Opium_37<\/em>, and <em>My Mother Dog<\/em> are published by Playwrights Canada Press. Her translation of Olivier Sylvestre&#8217;s <em>The Paradise Arms<\/em> was the winner of the 2018 Safewords National New Play Prize.<\/p>\n<p>Current projects include: R\u00e9becca D\u00e9raspe&#8217;s <em>Gam\u00e8tes;<\/em> Philippe Soldevila&#8217;s <em>Tales of the Snow<\/em>; David Paquet\u2019s <em>Wildfire and The Shoe<\/em>; and Olivier Sylvestre&#8217;s <em>Le D\u00e9sert<\/em>. The 2019-20 season will see the world English-language premieres of S\u00e9bastien Harrisson\u2019s <em>From Alaska<\/em> and one other play (yet to be announced) in Vancouver, as well as productions in Edmonton, Saskatoon, Toronto, Chicago, and Montr\u00e9al.<\/p>\n<p>Brodie\u2019s own plays and operas have been produced across Canada as well as in the UK, USA, and New Zealand, and on CBC Radio. His first full-length play<em> Rearview<\/em> was presented in both French and English versions in Sudbury in the fall of 2016. This was Rearview\u2019s third production, after being produced in Saskatoon in 2009 and Brussels in 2013. <em>Rearview<\/em> is published by Dramaturges \u00c9diteurs and was nominated in 2010 for the Governor general\u2019s literary arts award. Wajdi Mouawad named Gilles as one of the resident playwrights at the National Arts Centre&#8217;s Th\u00e9\u00e2tre fran\u00e7ais from 2008 to 2012, where he developed his play <em>Dehors<\/em>.<em> Dehors<\/em> was published by L\u2019Instant-Sc\u00e8ne in 2017. Gilles has collaborated on numerous devised pieces such as <em>ishow<\/em>, <em>Apr\u00e8s la Peur<\/em> and Gabriel Dumont&#8217;s <em>Wild West Show<\/em>. She has also translated two plays by Marilyn Perreault, <em>Rock, Paper, Jackknife\u2026<\/em> (Talisman Theatre, 2009 and Playwrights Canada Press, 2010) and <em>Bus Stops<\/em> (Th\u00e9\u00e2tre I.N.K. at Centaur Theatre, 2016) and created supertitles for a third,<em>&nbsp;Fiel&nbsp;(Venom)<\/em>. Her 15 minute play, <em>Lolo\u2019s Soup<\/em>, was workshopped as part of The Sprouts Festival by Concrete Theatre in Edmonton, AB in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Carmela was the Associate Artist at The Firehall Arts Centre where she served as artist liaison, community outreach development coordinator, and audience outreach coordinator. From 2017-2018, she was a co-producer of The Virago Play series (now Killjoy Theatre), which develops new plays by female identified or non-binary playwrights. From 2012 to 2019, he was the Artistic Director of Gateway Theatre. At Gateway, Jovanni directed productions of <em>Harvest<\/em> by Ken Cameron,<em> Closer Than Ever<\/em> by Richard Maltby Jr. and David Shire, <em>Valley Song<\/em> by Athol Fugard, and <em>Yoga Play<\/em> by Dipika Guha. He acted in the world premiere of Lauren Yee\u2019s <em>King of the Yees<\/em>. And Jovanni also wrote <em>Nine Dragons<\/em>&nbsp;(Winner of&nbsp;a Jessie Richardson Award for Outstanding New Play).<\/p>\n<p>Prior to Gateway, Jovanni was the Artistic Director of Cahoots Theatre Projects. In 2010, his one-man play, <em>A Taste of Empire<\/em>, was nominated for two Dora Mavor Moore Awards including Outstanding New Play.&nbsp;<em>A Taste of Empire<\/em> was subsequently remounted by Boca del Lupo Theatre in Vancouver in 2014 and 2015. Later, with the assistance of the Glassco Translation Residency in Tadoussac (2016), Derek Chan translated <em>A Taste of Empire<\/em> into Cantonese.
