{"id":8153,"date":"2020-10-07T09:25:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-07T13:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/2020\/10\/06\/apply-now-introduction-to-theatre-translation-copy\/"},"modified":"2020-10-08T13:32:30","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T17:32:30","slug":"introduction-to-theatre-translation-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/fr\/2020\/10\/07\/introduction-to-theatre-translation-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE TRANSLATION 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A one-on-one mentorship opportunity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For years Playwrights\u2019 Workshop Montreal (PWM) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cead.qc.ca\/cead\/mandate\">Centre des auteurs dramatiques<\/a> (CEAD) have worked to forge links between French and English language theatre communities and foster the art of theatre translation.&nbsp;To this end, the two organizations have once again partnered together to offer two individualized mentorships meant to familiarize playwrights to the craft of theatre translation. The mentorship described below is focused on French to English theatre translation. Details on the English to French translation component of this mentorship can be found on the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cead.qc.ca\/_news\/id\/451\">CEAD&#8217;s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the mentorship works:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>PWM will select 1 participant with an interest in French to English theatre translation;<\/li><li>Over a period of several months, the participant will translate excerpts (roughly 10-12 pages) of two contemporary Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois plays selected by the CEAD;<\/li><li>Over several weeks, the participant will receive a total of 12 hours of dramaturgical support from acclaimed playwright and theatre translator<strong>&nbsp;Alexis Diamond<\/strong>;<\/li><li>The participant will&nbsp;have the opportunity to discuss their translations with the original playwrights;<\/li><li>The mentorship will culminate in two 4-hour workshops during which professional actors will read and discuss the newly-translated excerpts;<\/li><li>The participant will then have the chance to meet with the second participant as well as both mentors to present their work and discuss their experiences;<\/li><li>After the workshops, the participant will submit their final drafts of the translated excerpts to the CEAD.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who can apply?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Montreal-based playwrights with a strong interest in French-to-English theatre translation;<\/li><li>The candidate must have excellent writing skills in English and have fluent comprehension of Qu\u00e9becois French;<\/li><li>Playwrights with little to no experience in theatre translation are encouraged to apply;<\/li><li>Applicants must have a minimum of two professionally produced pieces or Fringe productions.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 Alexis Diamond<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-circle-mask\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playwrights.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/diamond-bw-cropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6252\" height=\"250\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:67%\">\n<p><br><strong>Alexis Diamond<\/strong> is a Montreal-based playwright, opera librettist, translator and theatre curator. Her award-winning plays, operas and translations for audiences of all ages have been presented across Canada, in the U.S. and in Europe. She also collaborates with several international artists on performance-installations involving text, movement and sound. In 2019, Alexis Diamond served as co-artistic director of the Jamais Lu festival, where she also presented a bilingual play,&nbsp;<em>Faux-amis<\/em>, with co-author Hubert Lemire, with support from the CALQ.
