Isadora

Isadora is a node-based visual programming language available on Windows and MacOS. It is similar to other node-based programs such as Touchdesigner but is primarily geared towards live performance playback and has a built-in scene functionality.

Isadora is able to take in a variety of data and input types that can be used to drive live generative visuals. Visuals are created using networks of nodes which Isadora refers to as “actors”.

Has a few more limitations (such as the number of camera inputs and projector outputs) than Touchdesigner but is still extremely powerful.

It’s based in a 3D environment and comes with a large variety of templates that can be used as a starting point. Starting out users should be able to just use the built in components and visual node scripting but as needs get more complex it is possible to add custom code using Javascript. Lens Studio also supports custom machine learning libraries.

Loopback

Loopback is an audio routing and mixing utility available for MacOS created by Rogue Amoeba.  Loopback allows you to create a virtual input device, assign sources (such as a physical microphone, audio from chrome, etc), route it as many channels as needed, and then add monitors (headphones, speakers) if needed.  Loopback is a great way of getting audio from one program on your computer to another (such as inputting Qlab to zoom). Anywhere where you can configure a microphone input or speaker output can be set to go to a virtual loopback device.  It pairs particularly well with audio hijack.

  • Free trial with limitations

Miro

Miro can best be described as an online collaborative whiteboard.  It can be used for brainstorming or organizing thoughts and strategies and has a similar feeling to a group covering a wall in sticky notes. To aid groups in their virtual collaboration it also has video & audio conferencing functionality built into it so users don’t need to be on a separate call to communicate with each other.  Miro is a great tool to keep brainstorming organized and allows users to work asynchronously in one communal space.  It contains a rich integration library with other pieces of software and comes with various presets for different workflows. Free users are limited to 3 active boards.

COST:

  • Free accounts can create 3 boards, but anyone can contribute to a board

  • Paid version scales from $10 – $20 / month / user

NDI | HX Camera

NDI | HX Camera is an iOS and Android app which allows the user to turn their phone into a camera feed and stream video over wifi using NDI. When open it will show up as a NDI feed to any NDI-compatible devices on the same network and the app has controls for bandwidth usage. While it might not be the best option if you don’t have any networking knowledge, it’s one of the more reliable video over wifi options and has the advantage of being seen by any program that accepts NDI input. This negates the need for intermediate clients running on your show control computer.

COST: $27.99CAD
