About us

Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal (PWM) is a dynamic nonprofit organization dedicated to the art and craft of dramaturgy and playwriting. PWM acts as an incubator for new work that brings together dramaturgical expertise, a multimedia space in Montreal, and various support programs for writers, translators, interdisciplinary creators and their collaborators.

Our commitment is to support playwrights and artists through the creative process according to their vision for their work. The organization strives to cultivate a space where playwrights can be artistically vulnerable and open, challenge themselves, and define their own risks and goals.

For over 60 years, playwriting and theatre creation have been at the heart of PWM. Programs have also expanded to now include the exploration of devised, digital, and interdisciplinary modes of theatre and performance creation. We actively seek collaborations with diverse artistic approaches and are dedicated to supporting works that reflect a wide range of cultural identities and experiences.

The board

PWM is on the search for new members to join its Board of Directors. The Board’s mission is to support the growth of PWM and deepen the impact of its programs. We work to provide oversight, specialized expertise, and guidance to the organization and its leaders.

The Board of Directors is composed of 7 to 15 directors, one third of whom are artists. The Board meets 6 times a year, every two months. Including committee involvement, the expectations of time required are approximately 2 to 4 hours a month.

Account and finances

This individual will bring expertise in financial oversight, budgeting, and accounting practices. Their responsibilities will include overseeing the organization’s financial health, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and providing strategic financial advice to support our mission. Ideal candidates will have a background in accounting or finance, experience with non-profit financial reporting, and a commitment to fostering financial transparency and accountability.

human resources and organization

Key responsibilities will include advising on best practices for recruitment, retention, and employee engagement, as well supporting the Artistic and Managing Directors to answer any HR questions and provide guidance on the best path forward, all while ensuring compliance with employment laws and regulations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in HR management, organizational development, and a passion for creating inclusive and supportive work environments.

Fundraising & Development

This individual will bring  their experience in fundraising strategies, donor relations, and development planning. Their role will involve providing guidance in fundraising and outreach, identifying and cultivating potential donors, and developing long-term funding strategies to support our programs. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in successful fundraising campaigns, excellent networking skills, and a deep commitment to advancing the mission of PWM through sustainable financial support.

AMPLIFIER offers a long-term exploratory creation process to a playwright who identifies as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit), Black, POC, racialized, including 1st or 2nd generation immigrant artists (as defined in the Conseil des Arts de Montréal’s glossary), working creatively in one of Canada’s official languages. This program offers artistic and financial support to one working* playwright residing on the island of Montréal, including dramaturgical collaboration, a professional workshop with actors, and a residency leading to a presentation to programmers and peers.

AMPLIFIER seeks to foster dialogue between Montréal’s English and French speaking theatre communities, as well as intercultural exchanges and greater representation for culturally diverse artists within the theatre community and on Montréal’s stages.

In order to support artists creating in French and artists creating in English, CAM et La Serre offer this program alternately with the Centre des auteurs dramatiques (CEAD) in French (Résidence Voix Théâtrales), and with PWM in English. The 2025-2027 edition is intended for artists working in the English language. PWM supports English language minority artists in Quebec, therefore the work with PWM will take place in English. Applications are to be submitted in English.

LA SERRE – ARTS VIVANTS

LA SERRE is a structuring incubator that supports emerging artists in the development and establishment of their artistic practices. It offers initiatives conducive to their visibility; takes care of its community, and offers inspiring spaces. LA SERRE supports emerging artists by creating lasting and invested connections with them. It enables artists to create and share performances that shift the perspectives of spectators and explore new ways of being together. The practices supported by LA SERRE question, transform and resist preconceptions, let pluralities unfold, and contribute to the renewal of established models. LA SERRE activates collaborations between artists, citizens, fields of knowledge, and artistic disciplines. Its support is experimental and multifaceted.

SOUTIEN FOURNI

The 2025-2027 AMPLIFIER artist will receive a project creation grant of $13,000 from the CAM over two years, along with numerous support provided by PWM, LA SERRE, and CAM. This is a one-time, non-renewable grant.

The program takes place over two years, and support is provided as follows:

YEAR 1

$3,000 creation grant for a new theatrical creation

30 hours of dramaturgical collaboration with Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal

A 9 hour workshop with actors with Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal

A reading presentation with actors at Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal

YEAR 2

$10,000 creation grant for production

50 hours of production and management mentorship by LA SERRE–arts vivants

60 hours of free access to the Conseil des Arts de Montréal’s studios

Presentation of two performances in lab format

One-year subscription to Machinerie des arts.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applications will be evaluated by representatives of the CAM, PWM, and La Serre. Projects will be evaluated based on merit, feasibility, and impact on the artist.

RÉSUMÉ DU POSTE

Since 2019, le Centre des auteurs dramatiques (CEAD) et PWM have worked in partnership, with the support of  Compétence Culture, to pool their professional development resources. The Professional Development and Training Coordinator will be a mutualized employee of both partner organizations, however the employment contract will be held with CEAD and the employee will be governed by CEAD’s policy on working conditions and staff conduct. The tenure of this position will be granted following a three-month probationary period, but will always be conditional on the renewal of the mutualization agreement between CEAD and PWM, and the Compétence Culture wage subsidy.

Note: The responsibilities and duties of the Professional Development and Training Coordinator require that they are bilingual (French, English) and that they work mainly in-person in the CEAD or PWM offices, as well as in other locations where training activities may take place (this does not exclude the occasional flexibility to work from home).

SALAIRE ET AVANTAGES SOCIAUX
  • Part-time position (7 hours per day, 28 hours per week), divided equally between PWM and CEAD
  • Shared office with work computer at CEAD; laptop and shared workspace at PWM 
  • Standard office hours  9:00am-5:00pm with some flexibility to adjust on request
  • 22 – 25 $ per hour + benefits : 
    • Four weeks paid summer vacation while CEAD office closes in July
    • Two weeks off during the holiday season, according to the CEAD schedule
    • Two additional hours of paid lunch per week on PWM days
    • Bank of 5 paid wellness days
    • Access to CEAD group insurance plan after 3 months

Founded in 1965, the Centre des auteurs dramatiques (CEAD) is a centre for the support, promotion and dissemination of works by francophone playwrights, and now has more than 300 francophone members in Quebec and Canada. It occupies a unique position in terms of both the amount of opportunities it offers to authors as well as the quality and innovation it pursues.

PRINCIPALES RESPONSABILITÉS 

Your main tasks will be to support both CEAD and PWM in managing annual budget envelopes and organizing training activities specific to each organization. As the Professional Development & Training Coordinator you will play an important role within the CEAD and PWM teams as a position dedicated to professional development of artists we serve.  Training activities may take the form of dramaturgical collaborations or labs, workshops, co-development sessions for various creator roles, residencies, master classes, dramaturgical mentoring, and any other professional development activity for playwriting and theatre creation in French or English in Quebec. This is an essential role in the cultural training community, representing both organizations to Compétence Culture and a network of other Professional Development and Training Coordinators. 

Your two main areas of responsibilities will be: 

1) Contribute to the sound management of professional training funding envelopes, including budgeting and reporting. You will be responsible for maintaining positive and lasting working relationships with financial partners that support continuing education, such as Intervention-Compétences and Compétence Culture, and other colleagues in the Quebec Continuing Education network. The Professional Development & Training Coordinator will participate in consultation and training activities held by Compétence Culture.

2) Ensure that professional development activities are carried out according to CEAD and PWM policies and procedures, and within the limits of budgets and criteria imposed by the various grant programs.  Your main tasks will be administrative (contracts, registrations, payments, data entry, internal reports and accounting), and logistical (schedules, studio rental, planning).  This position is a unique opportunity to develop your knowledge in the field of continuing education in culture and, more specifically, in theater.

Professional training and development coordinator tasks 

In support of the CEAD and PWM management teams,  the Professional Development & Training Coordinator will perform the following:

Administrative tasks:

  • Prepare all documents and information required for funding application submission and reporting in accordance with the requirements of the Interventions-Compétences grant program.
  • Attend meetings and information-sessions offered by Compétence Culture funding bodies to gather information and provide summaries with updates and deadlines to each organization;
  • Support the administration and coordination of the programming funded by Compétence Culture, in the following ways:
    • Communicate with the selected playwrights, dramaturgs, actors (or agencies), and other artists for the administration and coordination of professional development activities; 
    • Create and send contracts for signature and ensure receipt;
    • Follow-up on registration fees and receipts; Issue or follow-up on payment of invoices and artistic fees;
    • Monitor and record updates of programming and budgets using tracking tables; ensure filing of all documents required for reporting; 
    • Enter administrative data according to tools specific to each organization (contact information, tax numbers, statistics);
    • Coordinate satisfaction surveys and feedback sessions from participants;
    • Ensure compliance with requirements of Intervention-Compétences and Compétence Culture allocated envelopes at all times;
    • Research and follow up on funding opportunities through Intervention-Compétences;
    • Managing registration of participants in public workshops or activities;
    • Perform all related administrative tasks.

Logistical Tasks:

  • Communicate with the co-workers, trainers, and participants involved in planning the schedule and logistics for each training activity;
  • Inform artists, trainers, and participants about CEAD and PWM policies and procedures; ensure adherence to prevention policies to ensure a safe space for artists  taking part in the training; 
  • Communicate with Compétence Culture, l’Union des Artistes, PACT, and Canadian Actors Equity regarding contracts and reports; 
  • Work with the communications departments of CEAD and PWM to provide information about the training activities, and support in the creation of written outreach materials; personal outreach to appropriate artists for specific programs and residencies based on the requests of the management teams; 
  • Coordinate the travel and accommodations of trainers and participants, taking into account allocated budgets; 
  • Print texts and other documents required for training activities;
  • Compile a list of all participants present or absent at each meeting and have required attendance sheets signed by trainers and participants;
  • Ensure the best possible reception conditions on the training site and respond to the needs or requests of trainers and participants (access, beverages, temperature, materials, etc.).
Compétences et caractéristiques
  • Organizational skills, autonomy, initiative;
  • Flexibility and comfort in adapting to changing priorities; 
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate with management, ability to work under pressure;
  • Ability to anticipate needs;
  • Knowledge of the Quebec cultural milieu and of Quebec and Canadian theatre (an asset).
qualifications
  • Degree in dramatic arts (production) or in management of cultural organizations OR two years experience in project coordination;
  • Good knowledge of business softwares, including GSuite and MS Office Suite;
  • Strong communication and writing skills in both French* and English.

* This position requires regular communication with CEAD’s francophone staff and artists, as well as government bodies that operate exclusively in French.

PWM+MAI Joint Support for Artists Featuring Ülfet Sevdi


Le Playwrights' Workshop Montréal and the MAI (Montréal, Arts Interculturels) sont heureux d’annoncer que le Soutien conjoint aux artistes du PWM et du MAI for Artists will feature Ülfet Sevdi and her work Motherhood.

The Artist

Ülfet Sevdi is a writer, theatre director, dramaturge, visual artist, and Theatre of the Oppressed practitioner based in Montreal.


She graduated in Fine Arts and Theatre in Türkiye in 2001. She holds a Research and Creation Master in the INDI program at Concordia University. She is now a PhD candidate in the INDI program at Concordia University. Her work deals with oral history and social narratives. Her approach is highly conceptual, experimental, and is theoretically grounded in the critical social sciences.


She was the co-founder and artistic director of nü.kolektif (2008-2014), an Istanbul-based collective of multidisciplinary artists involved in performances dealing with political topics. She continues this line of work with Thought Experiment Productions (2015-) since coming to Montreal, a production company she also co-founded and that she co-directs.


Her past work has been funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Montreal Council for the Arts, and the Cole Foundation. It has been presented in Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Ireland, Türkiye, and the USA.

LE PROJET

In the moment of my artistic and academic mid-career, less than two years ago, I have become a mother. I had just finished a Master thesis. It was still during the Covid pandemic. They say having a child changes your life. But you do not understand it until it happens to you. It is a deep, highly rewarding but also very demanding existential state.

How do we continue, what can be done? When will we be able to regain our normal artistic life? Our performer’s body? Our capacity to focus on reading and writing? After almost a year of pregnancy follow the first months, the first year. The body has changed; constraints –physical, emotional, psychological- are everywhere. Time flows outside, life continues.

But the artist-mother cannot keep up with all the ideas she has, cannot return to her practice. Even if she does, part of her is with the baby. You are stuck, in the physical and psychological senses of the term. You lost the freedom needed to create, both outside and inside. You lost the physical, psychological and time-related flexibility needed to create and go on stage to perform. You have to make peace with this new body. You have to find ways to understand how you can continue. As an artist, your financial well-being depends on your performance practice. You could use daycares, babysitters, but they cost money… to make money you need more money. Having a baby costs money, new needs are involved. If the system offers something, is it really enough? Is the father able to make it alone? And when you don’t have the traditional family support… To create you need time and space, to perform as well. Without time you can’t develop your ideas. Without time to create, you have nothing to perform. The experience is opening layers over layers of difficulties: the systemic, the psychological and the physical. Many different paradoxical vicious circles open up in front of you. And you’re exhausted.

This performance will be based around the technique I have developed in my last performance, Numbers Increase As We Count…, a technique I have called “Performative Acting”. It is a technique that involves specific tasks as well as dramaturgically framed open structures. I have sketched the framework for this technique in my Research and Creation Master Thesis in the INDI program, and am currently developing it further in my current PDH studies in the same program. For this project, I intend to carry this work with different artist- mothers/mother-artists from different performative artistic disciplines.

Call for Dramaturgical Collaboration Applications for 2024-2025


Applications for Dramaturgical Collaborations are now open.

The open call for Dramaturgical Collaborations is PWM’s invitation to playwrights and creators from across Canada to work with us. Together, we engage in deep explorations of story, form and process.

Our Dramaturgical Collaborations begin with one-on-one and ongoing Dramaturgical Conversations in which we discuss the needs of the project and playwright/creator(s). From there, we mutually determine with the artist(s) one or a combination of the following opportunities for the project:

Workshops:  An opportunity to explore a work in progress with actors/collaborators in order to evolve the project. Each Workshop is led by a PWM dramaturg in collaboration with the playwright/creator(s). Text based projects will be read by a company of actors and the playwright and dramaturg will then have the opportunity to ask and explore questions with the company. For non-text based projects, the Workshop is designed around whatever elements create the narrative/event. Sometimes a private reading for invited guests is a part of a Workshop, and it is used as an opportunity to introduce the work to an audience for the first time. The length of a Workshop is determined by the needs of the project.

Résidences: As part of the Dramaturgical Collaboration, PWM may offer dedicated Studio time for exploration (not rehearsal) to a playwright/creator(s) developing a project with PWM. These residencies take place in our studio in Montreal, and are separate from our national residencies at Gros Morne et Tadoussac.

Mentorships:  Mentorships are set up to answer a very specific need in the early stages of a creation process. In collaboration with a PWM Dramaturg, the playwright/creator determines who is best suited to accompany them through this essential phase. This may be an expert in a given discipline, a creator from a similar or different discipline, or a dramaturg with a particular field of experience. The mentor is paid by PWM to work with the artist as a mentee.

Considerations for Dramaturgical Collaboration at PWM

Stage of Development: We accept applications for projects at all stages of development depending on the nature of the work. It could be an idea, a first draft (in whatever form that may be), a new iteration of a project that has already been shared, or a draft that is in an advanced stage of development.

Discipline: This project could be a play, a performance, a digital work (for example: AR/VR, interactive game-based presentation, live or prerecorded virtual performance), or something hybrid in terms of language, discipline, or technology.

Lieu : We welcome local and national applications. We work in-person, virtually (for example: by video chat or by use of online collaborative tools), or a combination of both. *Please note that working virtually is an option available to out-of-town artists, as well as local artists based in Montreal.

Because developing plays and performances takes time, PWM has numerous ongoing projects. Therefore, we can only welcome a limited number of new projects per season despite receiving many inspiring applications. We are grateful to everyone who applies.

JOB POSTING: Administration Assistant + Program Coordinator (YCU & New Stories)

RÉSUMÉ DU POSTE

This is an administration and logistics role split between two main areas of responsibility: 1) that of an Administration Assistant, offering the management team support in the daily operations of the organization and 2) that of the Young Creators Unit (YCU) & New Stories Coordinator who will work closely with PWM’s Dramaturgs, Leila Ghaemi and Jesse Stong, on the administration, coordination and artistic support of these two programs.

Note: while there will be the option to work from home occasionally, this position requires a regular presence in the office and the selected candidate will be expected to work at PWM from 9am to 5pm most days of the week.

Organization, YCU and New Stories Overview

Fondé en 1963, le Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal (PWM) est un centre de développement dramaturgique national situé à Montréal.

PWM is led by a team of experienced dramaturgs and arts administrators. With a focus on dramaturgy, its mission is to collaborate with artists in the development of new works of theatre and performance. Its collaborative process draws on the team’s unique expertise and is tailored to the artist’s individual needs.

Our Young Creators Unit (YCU) is an incubator open to creators and performers under the age of 30. YCU offers emerging artists innovative, interactive, and dynamic workshops that focus on creation, dramaturgy, and professional development.

Le New Stories Project offers a series of accessible storytelling workshops to emerging and established neurodivergent artists.

Primary Responsibilities as the YCU & New Stories Coordinator 

(approx. 18 hours per week)

  • Track the budget for YCU and New Stories in collaboration with the Managing Director and Dramaturgs;
  • Carry out the administrative tasks for both programs, including contracts, payments and data entry for development workshops, mentorships and professional development activities;
  • Coordinate and assist in the production of the YCU Showcase and Queer Reading Series – liaise with various staff for contracting, marketing and communications and artist support;
  • Coordinate and assist in the production of outcomes for the New Stories program (events or online videos);
  • Gather and synthesize feedback from participants of both programs;
  • Monitor and produce content for PWM’s YCU Facebook group;
  • Assist PWM’s Dramaturgs with outreach, research, program development, and grant writing for both programs;
  • Research and communicate professional development opportunities for YCU participants;
  • Act as a liaison between PWM and program participants;
  • Other related tasks as assigned by PWM Dramaturgs.
Primary Responsibilities as Administration Assistant 

(approx. 22 hours per week*these tasks take place throughout the year and do not all happen simultaneously)

Office Management:

  • Answer general enquiries through the info email address and telephone;
  • Manage PWM’s studio and office supplies that includes managing the office supplies budget, ordering of supplies and maintaining a well organized studio and office space;
  • Assist and lead PWM in maintaining clean filing systems both online and in paper;
  • Research, optimize and manage various administrative tools (example: internet, telephone, photocopier, subscriptions to various services, software licences, insurance companies, membership to various arts organizations, etc);
  • Regularly update contact information in our database CiviCRM;
  • Coordinate the weekly staff meeting agenda, and take meeting minutes;
  • Coordinate the board meetings (6-7 per year): assist the Managing Director and Board of Directors with the agenda preparation and advance reading materials, scheduling, taking the board meeting minutes and maintaining PWM’s minute book

Programs Assistance:

  • Greet workshop participants and prepare the studio space (printing scripts, setting out tables, chairs, pens, coffee, etc);
  • Manage all of PWM’s studio rentals that includes coordination with the renter, paperwork and invoicing;
  • Keep PWM’s Carol Libman Library organized and up to date;
  • Update PWM’s casting book for development workshops — work with the PWM team to implement a new digital format;
  • Data entry: manage PWM’s CiviCRM database with the outcomes of all artistic projects andevents. Assist staff with data entry, leading and guiding questions about data entry

Administrative Assistance:

  • Prepare and send invoices, make payments, and enter receipts into Quickbooks;
  • Update PWM’s annual CADAC statistics with the Canada Council for the Arts;
  • Assist the Managing Director in organizing files for the annual audit;
  • Assist the Managing Director and bookkeeper in organizing files for end of month reconciliation;
  • Assist the Managing Director with grant reporting;
  • Assist with onboarding new employees, including assigning keys, creating accounts with various programs/software, and training on administrative procedures;
  • Other related tasks as assigned by PWM’s Managing Director and Artistic Director

qualifications

Experience:

  • 1-2 years experience in an administration or project management role or equivalent

Technical knowledge:

  • PWM uses the following software/programs to facilitate our work: G Suite (Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Drive), CiviCRM, Quickbooks, Slack, Asana. Experience with these specific programs is not required, but the candidate should have experience using common office software and programs.

Industry knowledge (nice to have, but not mandatory):

  • Familiarity with the creative process and new theatre creation
  • Knowledge of CAEA or ACTRA
